The Thistle Award (a nomination)

We have been nominated for the ‘ Scottish Thistle Award ‘ - Best Outdoor/Adventure Experience. Which is rather nice, and thank you to whoever put us forward. But do we deserve it when it is the beauty of the landscape, the weather, the great meal, the chat with a local or the person in the van that pulled over and waved? These all have a bigger role in the perfect bike ride through Galloway for our guests. We just book the best places to stay, put a well serviced bike under the rider and make sure everyone of our guests is happy.

We put a lot of trust in things we have no control of, and most of the time it all works just fine. At the end of a ride we always ask ‘ what was your favorite bit? ‘ You can never guess the answer, and it can quite literally be something we had never noticed.

I guess the real star of a ride in Galloway are the quiet roads, and lots of them. We try to give our guests the best navigation tools possible. People being people, there are those that will get lost. You may even have a better day and find something new by straying off the route and it may become an adventure.

I was leading a group last year and a car stopped. Down came the window and off went the engine for a 10 minute chat. One of the guests asked how long I had known the driver - “ Never met him in my life “ was my honest response. So, thank you the random people of Galloway, the open cafes, the friendly B&B owners and the farmer who put their Belted Galloway Cows in just the right field.
